After two months of work, we're finally ready to launch our newest section of Houseblogs.net: Topics.  Available as a new tab at the top of every page, this section allows readers to follow the latest content from all our members on a given subject--easily tracked all on a single page.

The Topics section of the site has four main sections:

    • Featured Topics - Several topics rotate at the top of the page, highlighting some of the most popular subjects from our site.

    • Active Topics This Week - Tags used by our members in the past seven days.

    • Topic Directory - All the commonly used topics used by our members, organized by category.

    • Your Bookmarked Topics - Available via the green button to the right on the Topics page, this allows you to review all the topics you've bookmarked in a single view.

    Track Your Favorite Topics

The Topics section can help you make sure that you keep up to date about new content on subjects that matter to you.  For example, a person with a craftsman bungalow in Minneapolis who is working on her kitchen might want to bookmark the topics 'bungalow', 'craftsman, 'Minneapolis', and 'kitchen'.  After doing so, that person can come back to their topics page and see everything that's been added to the site on those subjects--easy!  :-)

To track a particular topic, just find that term in the directory, visit the individual topic page, and click the grey 'bookmark this topic' link in the upper right corner of the page.  View all your bookmarked topics on a single page by clicking on the green button to the right...

Add Your Own Content to a Topic

Any user can contribute to a particular topic by using tags.  Any registered user can add tags to your own discussions, blog entries, or your profile page:

    • You can start a Discussions on a particular topic by adding one or more tags when you first begin a discussion.  Simply enter one or more tags (e.g., 'bathroom' or 'electrical') in the tags field.

    • On your Profile page in the Neighborhood section, you can add tags in the upper right section of the page.

    • If you have a blog that you register with our site, you can also add individual blog entries to a topic using tags.  There are several ways to tag your blog entries.  Go to 'How do I add tags to my blog entries?' to learn more.

Any member can add tags to their own content.  In addition, a select group of Editors also have the ability to edit tags across the entire site.

We'll be refining the Topics section and adding a few more features over the next few weeks--let us know if you have any suggestions.

After a week's preview for our registered housebloggers, we're now preparing to launch the new Topics section of this site on Monday, February 5th.  That will include adding the link to the houseblogs.net home page and making it visible to registered users and unregistered visitors alike.  If anyone has suggestions for the topics we've included in the directory on that page (or for the section overall) please let us know as I'm sure it will evolve over time.

In related news, the launch of Topics will coincide with a new cross-site promotion we're doing with a major cable TV channel.  On Monday the DIY Network will be launching a new 'Blog Cabin' promotion, which will include a special TV series, an online interactive site and blog, and a contest to give away the log cabin that's being built as the focus of the program.

Their site will include a link to the new Cabin section of the Topics area we're launching on Houseblogs.net.  Excerpts of recent entries by the cabin housebloggers here at Houseblogs.net will also be featured on their site.  We will also be linking back to the DIY Network site from Houseblogs.net as part of the cross-promotion between the sites, and including their cabin construction blog in our recent entries listing.  On our end, our very own houseblogger Bearfort Lodge has volunteered to play the role of 'editor' here on this site to help monitor relevant content and build up the cabinblogger sub-community here on the site.

We think that launching this partnership with the DIY Network in conjunction with the launch of our new Topics section is a neat example of the way we can continue to help home improvement fans find relevant content here at Houseblogs.net.  It's also a really cool opportunity to recognize the great contributions and writing by our members.  We hope it gets them the increased visibility and traffic that they deserve!

Thanks to everyone in the community who has contributed energy and suggestions that have gotten us to where we're at.  We look forward to how these new features help everyone connect.  :-)
