I'm trying to figure out how to tart up my blog banner with a graphic without spending a disproportionate amount in new software.

I know it needs to be in .gif or .jpg for Houseblogs.  Ditto to work properly as an "Image Only" header in Blogger.  I've worked something up in Word with an image and text, but of course, that's saved as a .doc.

I figure it must be easily done, since I see so many attractive banners on this forum!

How do I get from .doc to .gif or .jpg?

    Any ideas?  Thanks!

You can do that in Windows by going to the Word doc, pressing the 'Print Screen' button, and then opening up the Paint program that comes with Windows.  Once you open Paint go to Edit > Paste.

In Paint you can crop then crop the screenshot down to 250 pixels wide and save it as a .gif file.

Hi Kate, I made my first banners in word and then used the "print screen and paste into Paint" method Aaron described.  Since then, I found the program Paint.net, which is a free photoshop-like product that is pretty easy to use and full-featured enough for a hack like me.  I can't seem to make a link here, but you can download the program from: http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html

If you're interested in trying a graphics program, I'd recommend you give it a look.

You can download the Gimp for free:  http://www.gimp.org/windows/

Gimp is the Linux answer to Photoshop; but there is also a Windows installer version.

I second Bungalow 23's suggestion for paint.net.  It's a great program, and you have to love the price.

Thanks.  I'm trying the Screenshot to Paint method first.  I'm temporarily stuck on how to get rid of the part of the screenshot image I don't want, which is goofy, since I've cropped things in Paint before.

Try again tomorrow!  Maybe then I'll be adventurous (!) enough to download and try a new program or two.
