The article focuses primairly on wireless technologies ike Z-Wave, which is an industry standard they say several large manufacturers are starting to settle on. That said, they don't mention a lot of other competing technical standards out there (Zigbee comes to mind) so if you're serious about getting in to this stuff you'll want to use this as a starting point for further research.
