For sale...four rooms from the Bonneyconnellan Castle, circa 1886. Handcrafted, ornate woodwork that was fastened to the walls with screws, not nails. (Easy to salvage!) Ceiling beams, staircases, fireplace mantels, the works.

Oak, Maple, Mahogany, Cherry. Room diagrams included. But you'll have to dig your own moat.

We've just launched a new section here at Houseblogs.net--Topics! Available as a tab at the top of the home page, Topics will allow readers to surf the content of this site more easily by showing all our content about a specific subject (like kitchens, Victorian houses, or plumbing) all in one place.

As part of launching this new feature, we're also teaming up with the DIY Network cable television channel to feature houseblogs on the topic of log cabin construction. The DIY Network will be writing their own blog as they build a cabin in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains (which a lucky viewer will win, by the way). As part of their "Blog Cabin" promotion, they're featuring the log cabin bloggers who contribute to this site on their own blog sidebar.

Houseblogger Nominated for 2007 Bloggie Award

Today the final nominations for the 2007 weblog awards (the bloggies) were announced and lo and behold one of our very own member houseblogs made the list!

Our member moroccanmaryam writes the houseblog My Marrakesh, documenting her American family's efforts to build a home for themselves in Morocco.

The blog was nominated in the category for Best African or Middle Eastern Weblog. The other blogs in the category look good, so show your support by heading on over to register your vote before the February 2nd deadline.

While you're filling out your ballot, the great folks over at Apartment Therapy also got a nomination for Best Topical Weblog so consider supporting them too. Who knows, maybe we can muster up enough interest so that they'll have a 'best home improvement blog' next year!

Contest: Win a Stickley Font Set

The folks over at the houseblog Our 1916 Craftsman Bungalow are running a little post-holiday contest for the best photo of Christmas (or holiday) home decorations. The prize is a good one for old home fans: a computer font based on the handwritting of Gustav Stickley.

Houseblogs.net Version 4.0

Well, today we're finally ready to introduce the latest enhancements to this site...and we've got lots to share!

All of the new features can be found in an entirely new section of the site--the Houseblogs.net Community. Anyone can participate, and there are plenty of bells and whistles to benefit readers and houseblog writers alike.

Here are some things to try out:

Blogs - This is where you can sort, slice and dice the writing by our houseblogs members to your heart's content. The default view matches the houseblogs.net home page but there are a ton of features in there to narrow down the amount or types of houseblogs you'd like to see. Try the filters on the right hand side of the Blogs page to get started.

Profiles - Think of it as your 'about my house' page. Add as much or as little about yourself and your house as you like. Don't have a houseblog? No problem, upload some photos and share your house/condo/apartment/cardboard box, too.

Manage Your Blog - Want to swap in your blog's swanky new banner and replace your old one? Now you can do it as often as you like whenever you want...just go to your account page and use the 'My Blog' link on the side.

Friends - Like a particular houseblog? Have you found someone with the same house style that you have? Add them to your Friends list. After you do, be sure to try out the 'my friends' filter on the blog tab to keep track of the blog postings of your friends. :-)

Bookmarks - Find a blog entry you particularly like? Bookmark it! Bookmarks make it easy to find and save the blog entries you like the most.

Fast Search - Search the entire community quickly and see matching results in real time!

Tags - If you have a houseblog, you can now add tags to your own entries. If you're reading other housebloggers' blog entries, click on a tag (or view all of the tags) to quickly find similar content.

Interested? You can get started right away if you are already registered for our prior discussion forum--just log in. If you haven't registered before, now is the time...go here to register and enjoy the new features!

Also, like any major launch there are bound to be bugs. We've posted a running list of known issues over in the discussion forum so please add to it if you come across something strange...

Welcome Chicago Tribune Readers!

Today this site and several of our members were featured in the Chicago Tribune. If this is your first visit to Houseblogs.net, read on for an orientation to our little community of renovators...

First off, kudos to those who were featured in the article (registration required, or try bugmenot.com). Four websites that are members of Houseblogs.net were in the article:

That said, there are literally hundreds of other great 'houseblogs' out there on the web and you can use this site to find and keep up with them. Just check out our houseblogs directory for starters, as well as our recent entries list that features the latest writings from each member's blog.

Finally, if you're interested in keeping up with this site we'd suggest you register with our discussion forum, where you can chat with other home improvement enthusiasts. We're expecting to introduce more features to this site in the coming weeks and if you register for the forum we'll be able to keep you in the loop on all things houseblogging....

Growing Pains - Server Upgrade in Progress is Done!

While more traffic on Houseblogs.net is obviously a good thing, we've had a few recent problem with our hosting service. Access to the site may be sporatic over the next day several days as we conduct a server upgrade.

We're moving to a more dedicated server, which should be more stable in the future. In the mean time, sorry if you have any issues getting to the site. Also, you may find some things don't work quite right, including:

• Recent entries won't update
  
• The 'Featured Houseblog' box delivers an error statement
  
• The webring won't show anything beyond the first 10 most recent member sites
  
• Logins to the webring profile manager fail
  
• Duplicate entries appearing in the 'Recent Entries' and 'Last 100 Entries' feeds

The upgrade should be completed by Wednesday some time this weekend....wish us luck! :-)

Update: The upgrade and all the necessary fixes were wrapped up Sunday, so everything should be working (ad be a bit faster) now!

Welcome Money Magazine Readers

The June issue of Money Magazine includes Houseblogs.net on it's list of the 16 best real estate sites on the web.

In the article, they categorized the site as the 'best way to steel yourself for a remodel' before jumping in to a home renovation, and that definitely seems like a fair characterization. Even better, they encouraged readers to join in and start their own houseblogs. Even better--the more the merrier!
