a whole different lifestyle
Want to shop for real estate like a celebrity? Check out Sotheby's International Realty. Yes, that's the same Sotheby's -- the renowned auctioneers also sell really fancy real estate. Then you can have conversations like this: "Here, look at this link -- I've just found us a Swiss castle." "Ooooh, let me look." "No, wait -- I just found a BETTER Swiss castle." Just imagine the blog you'd keep then! by Jamaila Cohen-Michaelson, contributing editorPosted on 10/24 | Filed under Headlines : Resources
Deals, Deals, Deals!
We're not the only one to have launched a recent beta project! WiredDeals is a new site which aggregates some of the great deals to be had on, well, ANYTHING! I looked up the most recent deals on tools and was pleasantly surprised... $25 off of my next power tool purchase from Amazon? Yes, please. (via MeFi Projects)

Better Business Bureau Website on Home Improvement
According to the Seattle Times, calls to the Better Business Bureau regarding home improvement contractors rose from rose from 75,770 in 2001 to 278,100 in 2004. So, they've not got a website to help home owners manage projects, evaluate contractors and get estimates via email.

Kitchen & Bath Design Software Reviewed
I don't often come across reviews of home improvement software in the mainstream press, so I figured this was link worthy. Noah Matthews from Knight Ridder reviews Kitchen & Bath Floor Plan 3D and finds it pretty useful.
Of course, he used the product only after finishing his own remodeling project, so you'll have to decide how much you trust his judgement...

Digital Home DIY
Like the Connected Home site I blogged yesterday, I just noticed that CNet offers a similar site called Digital Home DIY. Unlike Connected Home, though, it offers rather practical advice on how to handle a variety of digital projects around the house yourself. The site was just named one of the Fifty Coolest Websites for 2005 by Time magazine.
The site is divided up by room, covering things like setting up a home theater or streaming audio from your PC to a stereo.
Cool stuff, but it's a bit light on content so I'm hoping they build it out quickly. They're currently taking votes on the next projects to add, but I think user submissions would be a smarter way to go if they really want to build up the site quickly.

Home Improvement Encyclopedia
I often hesitate to link to the Better Homes and Gardens site because their magazine offer pop-ups are horrid but their online Home Improvement Encyclopedia actually has lots of decent how-to content, so I figured I'd break my own rule for once. Sorry.

HGTVPro's "Virtual Tradeshows"
For those who can make it out of the house because your always working on it, you might find interest in the Virtual Tradeshows section of HGTVPro.com. Basically it's just a marketing fest, but it could potentially make for good browsing. The've currently got summaries of three shows, with the most recent being the 2005 International Builders Show.

Gliden Peel & Stick Paint Samples
The New York Times seems pretty keen on these new sticky paint sample cards from Glidden but I'm skeptical. From my experience you won't exactly know how it looks without painting a bit of the sample on the real surface.

SafeQuote - Finding a Qualified Contractor
This article focuses on a new service brokering relationships between homeowners and contractors, run by a group called the Home Improvement Council (a New York industry trade association). What makes it interesting to me is the extra 'behind the scenes' information in provides on the business model this and other such services (read as ServiceMaster) use. Personally I've always found word-of-mouth to be the most effective method of finding good contractors, but it doesn't hurt to stay educated on such things...

Would You Like Wood With That?
According to eBuild Lowe's and Home Depot now allow lumber orders via the web. Using that would probably require more planning on my part and would only make sense for large deliveries, of course. That said, the ability to browse the types of materials they stock could be helpful for those off hours when I typically get around to my planning.
For Lowe's just use their regular site but Home Depot users need to visit contractorservices.homedepot.com.
